ESO 350-40, PGC 2248, AM0035-335 - Cartwheel Galaxy

ESO 350-40, PGC 2248, AM0035-335 - Cartwheel Galaxy (NIRCam and MIRI Composite Image) - A large galaxy on the right, with two much smaller companion galaxies to the left at 10 o’clock and 9 o’clock. The large galaxy resembles a speckled wheel, with an oval outer ring and a small, off-center inner ring. The outer ring contains pink plumes like wheel spokes, with dusty blue regions in between. The pink areas are silicate dust, while the blue areas are pockets of young stars and hydrocarbon dust. The inner ring is smoother, filled in with a more uniform pale pink. This smaller ring is interwoven with thin, orange-pink threads. On the galaxy's right edge, a bright white star with 8 diffraction spikes shines. The two companion galaxies to the left, one above the other, are about the same size and both spiral galaxies. The galaxy above is a reverse S shape but similar in coloring and texture as the large ring galaxy. The galaxy below is smoother and largely white, with a blue tinge.

ESO 350-40, PGC 2248, AM0035-335 - Cartwheel Galaxy (near-infrared only) - Three interacting galaxies, in shades of blue. The rightmost galaxy, which is the largest, resembles a wheel with a central hub and spokes. It contains a large, oval outer ring, and a small, off-center oval ring. The rings and the space between them is filled with blue plumes and dots. The two on the left are around the same size, but smaller than the rightmost galaxy. The galaxy to the top left has many of the same features as the largest galaxy, but its shape is far more disturbed with no distinct rings, and has a few red dots. The last galaxy, below the top left galaxy, contains a blue-white core, and has a smooth texture and a distinct spiral pattern. The background of these galaxies is full of distant, orange stars and galaxies with various shapes.

IC 1623 (also known as Arp 236 or VV 114) is a pair of interacting galaxies located some 250 – 300 million light-years away from Earth in the constellation of Cetus (the Whale). IC 1623 is very bright when observed in the infrared and classified as a pair of luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs). It is approaching the final stage of its merger.

This 07/27/22 image of Jupiter taken by the Near-Infrared Camera on the new James Webb Space Telescope is artificially colored to emphasize stunning details of the planet: auroral emission from ionized hydrogen at both the north and south poles (red); high-altitude hazes (green) that swirl around the poles; and light reflected from the deeper main cloud (blue). The Great Red Spot, the equatorial region and compact cloud regions appear white or reddish-white; regions with little cloud cover appear as dark ribbons north of the equatorial region.

This false-color composite image of Jupiter was obtained 07/27/22 with the NIRCam instrument on board the JWST. Jupiter’s faint rings — a million times dimmer than the planet — and two of its small satellites, Amalthea (left) and Adrastea (dot at edge of ring), are clearly visible against a background of distant galaxies. The diffraction pattern created by the bright auroras and the moon Io (to the left out of the image), form a complex background of scattered light around Jupiter.

M74 (NGC 628) - The Phantom Galaxy

Spiral galaxy Messier 74 (also known as NGC 628) lies some 32 million light-years away toward the constellation Pisces. An island universe of about 100 billion stars with two prominent spiral arms, M74 has long been admired by astronomers as a perfect example of a grand-design spiral galaxy. M74's central region is brought into a stunning, sharp focus in this recently processed image using publicly available data from the James Webb Space Telescope. The colorized combination of image data sets is from two of Webb's instruments NIRcam and MIRI, operating at near- and mid-infrared wavelengths. It reveals cooler stars and dusty structures in the grand-design spiral galaxy only hinted at in previous space-based views.

NGC 3324 - “Cosmic Cliffs” in the Carina Nebula (NIRCam Image)

Cosmic Cliffs in the Carina Nebula (NIRCam Image) - The image is divided horizontally by an undulating line between a cloudscape forming a nebula along the bottom portion and a comparatively clear upper portion. Speckled across both portions is a starfield, showing innumerable stars of many sizes. The smallest of these are small, distant, and faint points of light. The largest of these appear larger, closer, brighter, and more fully resolved with 8-point diffraction spikes. The upper portion of the image is blueish, and has wispy translucent cloud-like streaks rising from the nebula below. The orangish cloudy formation in the bottom half varies in density and ranges from translucent to opaque. The stars vary in color, the majority of which have a blue or orange hue. The cloud-like structure of the nebula contains ridges, peaks, and valleys – an appearance very similar to a mountain range. Three long diffraction spikes from the top right edge of the image suggest the presence of a large star just out of view.

NGC 7317, NGC 7318A, NGC 7318B, NGC 7319, and NGC 7320 - Stephan's Quintet aka Hickson Compact Group 92 (HCG 92)

Stephan’s Quintet (NIRCam + MIRI Imaging) - NGC 7317, NGC 7318A, NGC 7318B, NGC 7319, and NGC 7320. A group of five galaxies that appear close to each other in the sky: two in the middle, one toward the top, one to the upper left, and one toward the bottom. Four of the five appear to be touching. One is somewhat separated. In the image, the galaxies are large relative to the hundreds of much smaller (more distant) galaxies in the background. All five galaxies have bright white cores. Each has a slightly different size, shape, structure, and coloring. Scattered across the image, in front of the galaxies are number of foreground stars with diffraction spikes: bright white points, each with eight bright lines radiating out from the center.

MIRI Image of NGC 7317, NGC 7318A, NGC 7318B, NGC 7319, and NGC 7320 - Stephan's Quintet aka Hickson Compact Group 92 (HCG 92), a collection of five galaxies, as seen by MIRI on the James Webb Space Telescope. The galaxies all glow in different colors, surrounded by lacy, glowing clouds of gas and dust. Four of the five are centered in the image. Three are visibly spiral galaxies, with tendrils extending out from their glowing centers. The galaxy farthest to the left appears slightly more clearly, with vibrant blue lacing surrounding the oval-shaped light of the galaxy. This is because the farthest left galaxy is not interacting with the other four; it’s actually far in the foreground from the others. The galaxies all appear against a field of sparkling stars and other, farther galaxies.

Five galaxies known as Stephan's Quintet. Two of the galaxies appear close together at the center of the image. One appears directly above, and another slightly to our left near the bottom of the image. Each of these four galaxies presents as an irregular dot of brilliant white light surrounded by glowing haze. A fifth galaxy hides at our center left in an oval shape marbled with a tangle of golden orange lines. Similar golden orange tangles appear around the two galaxies at the center of the image, and the galaxy above them. Above the two galaxies at the center is a bright, light blue cloud. This is a shock wave uncovered by the Chandra data. Scattered across the image are specks of white and golden orange light, gleaming stars and distant galaxies.

NGC 3132 - The Southern Ring Nebula

NGC 3132 - The Southern Ring Nebula - NIRCam Image - A planetary nebula, seen by the Webb telescope’s NIRCam instrument, against the blackness of space, with points of starlight behind it. The nebula itself is shaped like an irregular oval, with lacy, reddish orange plumes of gas and dust. Further inside the circle, the gas and dust glows bright blue. A glowing white ring separates the red and blue gases. In the center of the rings are two stars, one glowing much brighter than the other, with diffraction spikes radiating out from it.

NGC 3132 - The Southern Ring Nebula - MIRI Image - A planetary nebula seen, by Webb’s MIRI, against the blackness of space, with points of starlight behind it. Plumes of glowing bright blue gas radiate out from the oval-shaped nebula. Two separate ovals of reddish pink gas appear stacked on top of each other, inside the lacy blue gas clouds. In the center of the nebula, two stars glow close to each other. One star looks more red, while the other appears more yellow.
